The Aftermath of Maria - Day 14
It’s Wednesday, October 4th. There’s no power and our water comes and goes. The cell signal works about 30% of the time.
A terrible noise woke me up early in the morning. There was a man in the condo above us. This was the first time anyone had been up there since the storm blew through. The man was retching and coughing and vomiting non-stop. Of course all of our windows are open all the time and sound echoes through the concrete walls, so this was really loud. Jason got up and turned on a movie as loud as it would go. Apparently food was left in the fridge up there and this poor man was hired to clean it out. We try not to think about what must look and smell like a violent crime scene on the sixth floor.
Building A gets a rude awakening.
Luis is running the generator more, so maybe he found more diesel. We are happy to discover the water is back on this morning. Jason and I do one more round of laundry hoping it will be dry by Saturday morning. Jason makes a trip to the Econo grocery store to get meat and cheese for quesadillas. Fortunately he grabbed two bags of cheese, because one was full of mold. I immediately think of all the families who are scraping together cash to buy groceries only to find they’ve bought spoiled food. My heart has broken at least a hundred times for Puerto Rico. Add one more.
