That just happened.
We experience lots of little surprises here in PR.
There are people in the streets. Like walking through traffic in major intersections. They hand out fliers, sell bottles of water, and sometimes they juggle fire. WTH?
If you hear something that sounds like an alarm going off, it's probably critter related. It was about 9:30pm and we were hanging out at home when suddenly an incredibly loud and unpleasant noise came shrieking out of our bedroom. We initially thought the smoke detector was going off, but that's currently broken (that's so Puerto Rico, I know). After some investigating, I narrowed down the noise to one corner of the room, lifted our laundry bag, and found a cricket. Holy crap this is has got to be the world's loudest cricket!
One lovely Saturday morning we were hanging out at the condo when Jason heard what he thought was the fire alarm going off outside in the stairwell. Everything is concrete and sound echoes like crazy, and this was REALLY loud. I calmly turned around and said, "Bird." I hear it all the time while Jason is at work. It's actually one of my favorite PR birds, the Venezuelan troupial, or what we affectionately call "the orange birds".
Everything is always wet. Anything that can rust or corrode totally does. And quickly. (Notice the moisture on the mat. This is how it always looks.) My beloved rotary cutter will never be the same.
Critters can climb just about anywhere. This little guy was about 4 floors up. Jason managed to catch him and moved him back downstairs. Later we almost smooshed him with our car in the parking lot. Not sure this iguana is going to live to see adulthood.
Iguanas make the most awesome Where's Waldo game ever. A few weeks ago when hanging out at La Vista Smokehouse here in Isabela, I spotted an iguana nestled in a treetop. We had been staring into these trees for at least half an hour and had been totally oblivious to the iguanas. After I saw the first one, we scanned the canopy and found three more. Below is a close up of the first two we found:
This is the view of the trees from our table (same photo as above):
With views like this, I'm happy to keep finding new surprises here in PR. :)
